Keeping self-confidence can be difficult, especially after you experience life’s many setbacks. Fear not—there are ways to regain your confidence! Anyone who is successful can tell you that at some point in their lives, they have experienced some kind of disappointment. They have obviously worked through it to get to where they are now. Here are some ways you can reclaim control of your most confident self.
Focus on the Positive
This can be difficult when you feel like the world is crashing down around you. Practicing gratitude only requires you to think of something that you feel you are lucky to have. Saying it out loud or writing it down can be more powerful than just thinking about it. When we focus on the positive, it can help our brains to rewire our thoughts. Even though things might seem difficult at the time, not everything is terrible. Try to think of one small thing that is going right or that makes you happy.
Learn from It
Admit your mistakes, think about what you have learned, and move on from it. Whatever “it” is, there is always a lesson to be learned. Reflecting on our past mistakes can help us to get a better handle on what we need to do in the future. This practice takes time but can be very beneficial to any aspect of your life. We all make mistakes and learning from it allows us to grow.
Seek Out Support
Everyone has someone they can depend on. While others don’t always know you need the support, sometimes you have to ask for it. Whether you are dealing with a financial setback, job loss, depression from alcoholism, or another failure, having a support system helps people to recover quicker. Call on a family member or friend and be specific with what you need from them. Sometimes you might just need someone to talk to, a shoulder to cry on, or to not be alone. Other times you might need different kinds of help.
Love Yourself No Matter What
This is another tough one. When something bad happens to us, we tend to be very hard on ourselves. Remember you are human, and humans make mistakes. You can practice self-love by talking to yourself and saying, “Self, I love you. I recognize you are doing the best you can, and I forgive you for your mistakes.” When we are too hard on ourselves, we can keep pushing ourselves down deep into a hole. Don’t let this happen! Dig yourself out of the whole by loving yourself no matter what happens.
Take Time for Yourself
The more you concentrate on what is wrong and push yourself, the worse you might feel. If something happens, take some time for yourself. Do something you love. Try a new hobby or activity. It will help you to feel better over and get your mind off what is bothering you. This can also help to reduce stress, which will make you feel more self-confident overall.
Set Attainable Goals for Next Time
When you take a few small steps at a time, you will feel successful. When we set goals that are extremely difficult to attain, that is when you might have a hard time reaching it. This can be devastating to your self-confidence. By setting smaller goals, you can feel better and more accomplished. This can do wonders for your overall confidence.
Don’t let a disappointment set you back for long. Take steps to be more confident with yourself. It might not happen overnight, but you will get there little by little.
